What are the library hours during DAOM modules?

During most of the year, the library is open from 7:45 AM to 7  PM, Monday through Thursday, 7:45 AM to 6 PM on Fridays, and 11 AM to 3 PM on Saturdays. We can offer reference help in person, by phone, or by email. 

I live out of state. Can you mail me a book?

Yes. Unless the next module is a week or less away, the library will mail books directly to doctoral students. Doctoral students need to contact library staff directly in order to request books be shipped to them.

How long can I keep borrowed materials?

Except for class reserve materials and items that have a waiting list, doctoral students may keep borrowed materials, including both books and media,  until the first day of the next monthly campus visit (usually 4 weeks).

Can I renew my materials?

You may renew a borrowed item twice. To renew an item, the doctoral student may either:

  • Renew online using their library card.
  • Bring the book to the library to renew it in person.
  • Email or call the library at (503) 253-3443 x 132.

In the case that a doctoral student forgets to renew the book and another student is waiting for that book, the doctoral student has one day after the end of the weekend module to mail the book back. After that, a late fee will be assessed to the item at $0.20 per day.

What is the charge for late materials?

There won’t be any charge if the doctoral student returns the borrowed item one day after the due date. After that, the late fee will start to accrue at the following rate:

  • Books & Media: $0.20 per day
  • Class Reserve Materials (if applicable): $0.50 per hour.

Materials six weeks overdue will be treated as lost materials and will be assessed with the lost material charge including the replacement cost of the item and a $5 processing fee. Unpaid library fees will be collected during registration for the next term; for graduating students, diplomas will be withheld until all library fees are paid.

What if the item I am looking for is not available?

If the item is in Primo but is currently checked out, you may:

    1. Place a hold on the item using your library card, or
    2. Check with your local public library--see if they can obtain the item for you by an earlier date through their Interlibrary Loan service.

If you are having a hard time finding material on your topic, you can also try searching libraries all across the globe by visiting WorldCat. If you find an item you are interested in that the OCOM Library does not have access to, you can see if it is available at your local public library or request it using OCOM's ILL Service. For simple searches, you may also use this search box:

Can I still use the library after I graduate?

Yes! Alumni are encouraged to continue using the OCOM Library post-graduation. In addition to continuing to check out materials from OCOM, Alumni can use any of our subscription databases while on-campus; off-use access to subscription databases is limited to current students, staff and faculty.

How do I get a library card?

If you still have your school ID badge, that will continue to be your library card. If you do not have a badge, alumni may request a free library card by visiting us in person. We are located in the heart of Portland's Old Town neighborhood at 75 NW Couch Street. 

Can I use the library computers?

Yes, alumni may use the Library computers. Due to the limited number of computer stations, guest access is awarded at the discretion of Library staff. OCOM students have priority for computer use, and other users may be asked to give up their seats if students need to use a computer.

Alumni may print using the library photocopier or printers; the cost is $0.10 per page and is due before leaving the library. Alumni may not add printing charges to their library accounts.

Can I use the library databases?

Alumni are welcome to use library subscription databases while on-campus, though remote access to these databases are reserved to current students, staff and faculty. For alumni who cannot visit the OCOM Library and take advantage of the on-site databases, we recommend using Pubmed to search for journal articles, as it is free to the public. Alumni Association Members can pair Pubmed with our Loansome Doc service, which allows you to request article citations found in Pubmed to be emailed to you.

Can you email me a journal article?

You can find additional free online resources by using our Alumni Guide to Research, or by using any of the databases that are free to the public.

Alumni Association Members may request articles via the Loansome Doc service. By creating a Loansome Doc account, users with a valid OCOM library card can search for articles in Pubmed and request them from the OCOM Library. This service is free to members of OCOM's Alumni Association at no charge. Click here to learn more about Loansome Doc.

Can I place a hold on a book from one of the PAHL libraries?

Unfortunately, no. This service is reserved for current students, staff and faculty (including teaching assistants).

I live out of state. Can you mail me a book?

The OCOM Library does not ship books directly to alumni, only to other libraries, so you will need to find a library close to you that provides interlibrary loan services. If you would like to check out items from OCOM Library but do not live in the Portland-metro area, you may place an interlibrary loan request with your local public library, making sure to note that OCOM carries the item you are looking for. We will then ship the item out for you to pick up at your local library. Most public libraries offer this service free of charge.  If you live near a school a school of acupuncture (or other medical field), check with them as they may have practitioner accounts available.

Can I use the library?

The library is open to members of the OCOM community for acupuncture and oriental medicine-related research. Guests who disrupt student users or abuse services may be asked to leave; this is at the discretion of library staff.

Can I check out materials?

Community members are free to use the facilities, but checking out items is reserved to OCOM Library card-holders. Local practitioners may sign up for a library card at a cost of $35 / year, which gives them the ability to check out up to five items at a time from OCOM's general collection. Any fines of more than $5 must be paid prior to checking out any new materials. Checkout privileges are limited to regularly circulating materials owned by OCOM; PAHL and Interlibrary Loan borrowing privileges are reserved for current OCOM students, staff and faculty only. Can I use a library computer?

Members of the OCOM community may use the Library computers for up to two-hours per day; at the time of use, guests must check in at the circulation desk. Due to the limited number of computer stations, guest access is awarded at the discretion of Library staff. OCOM students have priority for computer use, and guests may be asked to give up their seats if students need to use a computer. Guests who have been granted access to the library computers or have access to the campus wifi network may use library databases while on-campus.
